Allegheny is apart of the Pittsburgh, PA Metropolitan area. Allegheny County was named after the Allegheny River, being the first in Pennsylvania to abide a Native American name. Allegheny County was officially established on September 24, 1788, from parts of the Washington and Westmoreland counties. The reasoning behind the county’s establishment was because of the pressure from settlers living in the Pittsburgh area, which became the county seat in 1791.

In the late 18th century, farming played a big role in the evolution of the county. Due to a surplus of grains by reason of the lack of transportation perplexity, farmers began to distill grain into whiskey. Because of the abundant amount of whiskey production, this helped farmers significantly with finances. But in the 1790’s, the whiskey excise tax was introduced by the United States federal government. The Whiskey Rebellion was started by farmers who depended on income from whiskey sales and repelled to pay. After the Whiskey Rebellion was dismissed, the county expeditiously developed into the nation’s main steel producer and gained the nickname of “The Steel Capital of the World”.
