Famous Personal Injury Cases that Blew Up the Media
If you have experienced a personal injury or your property was damaged due to negligent actions of a third party, then you have the legal right to seek compensation for those damages. But, to get the right compensation, it is essential that you visit a qualified personal injury lawyer since these cases are governed by tort law (negligent or intentional cases which causes harm to the individual).
If you think whether your case would be eligible for compensation, then you should check out these famous personal injury cases. They will leave your eyes wide open.
Harris vs. McGraw
Television personality Dr. Phil McGraw or Dr. Phil, and his wife found themselves in the hot seat when their longtime friend skin specialist Janet Harris slapped them with a personal injury case. According to Harris, she was bitten by the couple’s dog Maggie when she was visiting them and instead of taking Harris to a doctor the couple convinced her not to seek medical help for fear of negative publicity.
But, due to non-treatment, Harris developed a severe bacterial infection which led to the loss of hearing and hand tremors. Since Harris used her hands for treating her patients, she had to shut shop. She filed a lawsuit of $7 million against the McGraws as she was unable to work for a long time, was emotionally stressed and had substantial medical bills to pay. The case was settled out of court in 2013 for an undisclosed amount.
Liebeck vs. McDonald’s Restaurants
You may have noticed that all coffee mugs in take-outs have a warning printed on it saying “Caution: The Contents of this container are hot.” This advice came into effect after the famous case of Stella Liebeck who sued McDonald’s after the coffee she had ordered in a drive through spilled and burnt her thighs and groin. The burns were so severe that Liebeck required skin grafting.
After she sued McDonald’s, it was found that their beverage was indeed hotter than the drinks in other restaurants. When she sought damages for $20,000 (cost of her treatment), she was offered a meager $800 by McDonald’s. It was then that she took the entire chain to court and was awarded $2.7 million in punitive damages.
Gladys Escola vs. Coca-Cola
In 1944 Gladys Escola was in for a big surprise when she was stocking glass coca cola bottles in her refrigerator. One of the bottles exploded injuring her hands severely. She had damaged her blood vessels and severed her muscles of her hand. She sued Coca-Cola with the help of her personal injury attorney, and the court ruled in her favor.
Trapped Burglar
In an unusual case in PA, a thief Terrence Dickinson found himself trapped in the very property he planned to steal. The garage door, which was his original exit door, did not operate properly. He tried to escape through the connecting door to the garage and the house but it turned out it too was locked. In the process, he was stuck in the property for eight days and lived on dog food and soda. When he got out, he sued the property owner with the help of his personal injury lawyer and won $500,000 for the mental torture he suffered as a result.
CBS vs. Bret Michaels
Bret Michaels sued CBS in 2009 at the Tony Awards as he had not been given proper instruction on how to exit the stage. As a result, he hit his head on a stage piece and got a broken nose. He suffered a brain hemorrhage a few months later which was believed to have caused due to this. Michaels won an undisclosed amount from CBS in the settlement.
