Don’t Face your Flood Damage Claim Dispute Alone
Whether you have a home at the shore, in the mountains or next to a stream, having flood insurance is a smart way to protect your investment. Just when you think you don’t need it, a storm produces flooding in your neighborhood.
What Causes Flooding?
Flooding can happen anywhere, but usually in flat land where the water cannot run off into a sewer, a stream or dry basin. It can also occur when there is no grass to absorb the water, such as streets and concrete pads. Flooding that develops rapidly is called flash floods. This is when there is an excessive amount of rain in short amount of time. The drainage in the area cannot handle the overload of rain. Other causes of flooding, especially in coastal areas, are wind and tidal surges. Super Storm Sandy caused millions of dollars’ worth of flooding damage. Unfortunately, there were a number of insurance companies that unjustly reduced payments to homeowners. As you can imagine, this caused thousands of lawsuits. And there were just as many contractors who took advantage of homeowners. According to the National Flood Insurance Program, over 20% of flood claims are from areas that are not high risk for flooding.
What to Do After a Flood
When flooding a happens, you should document the losses with your cell phone (photos and videos). You may also need to contact the fire department and local health department depending on the severity of the flooding and safety hazards. Next, contact your insurance company to file a claim. You only have 60 days from the date of the flood to file a claim. You should know if your claim has been approved or denied within 30 days of filing it. The attorneys at Saffren & Weinberg can go over your policies to determine what is covered and how to calculate the worth of your valuables.
